Clear Cut Glass Ch5 – The New Friend

Rees knocked on the front of a large brown wooden door. The number 47 was hanging at a slight crooked angle on the door frame. The sound of early 90’s hip hop gently pounded through the building. Rees reached up to straighten the crooked number, even its fixture was loose, when he let go it swung back to its original resting position. A laugh came from behind him as his wife stretched over his shoulder and flicked the number with her finger. Sending it rocking to and fro until it came to stop at exactly the same position where it rested before. She wrapped her arms around him and kissed the top of his head. Rees held her clasped hands which rested on his chest and kissed them while rubbing her silky soft skinned. He looked down and regarded his wife’s bronzed skin as she rested her chin on top of his. She normally had a slight olive hue to her complexion but recently being in the sun, it had deepened to a light bronze. They had been spending a lot of time together lately gardening. Pulling up weeds and planting new flowers, plants etc. Rees had dug out a new patch for future vegetables. Time spent in the sun was extremely welcome. Rees himself was naturally quite fair. He took after his father in almost every aspect. His father, a short stocky but  well built bricklayer from Brighton, had fallen in love with a beautiful tall dark skinned doctor from ghana. His parents had 5 children but out of all his siblings who took after his mother, darker skin, fuller afro hair and taller stature, he was shorter, more stocky, well built physique and fairer skin with straight hair. Almost exactly like his dad except for his profession. Rees had gone the way of Clinical medicine, just like his mother, rather than as a skilled labourer.

Rees peered through a glass embedded into the wooden door frame. The glass was cut to display an intricate floral design. Due to the cut of the glass, Rees was unable to see anything clear through the intricate window, the light was fragmented. He knocked on the door again, this time he accompanied the knock with a double ring of the doorbell.

“The music is too loud. They can’t hear us Rees.”

“I know.” Rees pushed his face closer to the glass, squinting his eyes to see through. “Lelani why don’t you call Artie or Lea on your phone.”

Lelani hummed in acknowledgement letting go of her grip around his chest. She stroked her long brown hair past her ear and brought her mobile phone to it.

  “Call Lea”

“Calling Lea” a robotic voice answered in reply.

Rees turned around from the front door and looked towards his car parked out on the road. Two small boys ran up and down on the pavement chasing each other. Calling the word He when one was tagged. Everyone from London remembers this game as a child. He or It being the London slang for what the rest of the world might refer to as tag. One of the children, the smaller one ran out into the road to avoid his brother from tagging him. Fortunately there was no danger. The road was a quiet side road which was rarely used. Any parent watching over their children would hear the sounds of a vehicle first before it came within any distance of unsuspecting kids.

“Boys be careful. If you’re going to play He, don’t run into the road please.” Rees warned them.

“Boys, I hope you’re being careful and listening to your dad.”

Just as their attention was directed towards their children, the front door opened, allowing the suppressed music to pour out. Rees turned to the greeting of a short slim woman with curly afro hair. She greeted Rees with a smile as he leaned forward and kissed her on both cheeks.

  “Hi. Rees.”

  “Hi Lea.”

Rees walked past her, while waving at the boys to come inside. They approached Lea waving a shy hello then ran into the house. Rees looked backwards as his wife and Lea embraced each other. Rees smiled. He was happy that his wife was able to see one of her closest friends. They hadn’t seen each other for a long time. A tall well built man standing 6ft tall appeared at the end of the hallway. Rees waved a small hello. The man walked toward him. He was wearing a large shirt which was opened down to the third button but had a vest on underneath. His short sleeved shirt revealed extensive tattooing  against his dark brown skin.

“Nice to see you Artie” Rees extended his hand.

“Long Time Rees, Long Time.”  Artie shook Rees’ hand. “Girls come and say hello to uncle Rees and aunt Lelani.”

Two girls who were of similar size to the boys ran into the front hallway. The oldest one waved a loud hello to Rees and a more excited hello to the boys. The youngest one said nothing and clung to her father’s legs while burying her head into his jeans. Rees gave a small laugh. It had been a while since he had seen the two girls. They had grown substantially.

Children grow so quickly he thought to himself. He watched Artie laugh as he tried to pull his youngest daughter away from his leg. Rees was impressed with Arties physique. Rees crossed his arms. He felt small in comparison with Artie. Especially Artie’s huge arms. Rees wondered how much time Artie spent at the gym. He knew Artie had been into fitness and gym for many years but each time Rees saw Artie it was as if he’d just seen him for the first time.

“Everyone is outside in the garden. Come through bruv.” Artie gestured stepping to the side and allowing Rees to walk past.

Rees looked back as Lelani greeted Artie, with the same double cheek kiss. Rees already knew the layout of the house. He had been there a few times before. He called after his sons who had run off with Artie’s eldest into the back garden. It wasn’t so much to know their whereabouts that he called after them but for his own self comfort. Rees disliked crowded places and being around people he didn’t know. It felt uncomfortable to him. He never really knew what to say and felt awkward when trying to make conversation. If he could he would find a nice quiet seat somewhere in the shade and shy away from everyone. Hopefully not draw too much attention to himself. Rees made his way through the garden. Artie politely introduced him to all his other guests. Rees couldn’t remember most of their names. Cousins, friends, work mates. It was too much for Rees to pay attention to. Lelani had disappeared. Most likely she had gone off with Lea for some face to face catching up. Rees hoped that no one would stop near him for conversation. Food, drink and a quiet spot was of the utmost importance. During this whole time Artie’s youngest daughter still clung to his legs. Hiding behind her father. Artie approached a Man of slimmer build and slightly taller height than himself. To the sight of him, Artie’s youngest let go of her father’s legs and flew towards the man. He scooped her off of her feet, throwing her up into the air and blew raspberries on her cheek. She giggled and clung  her arms around the man’s neck. Rees checked the man from head to toe. He was very attractive. Tall, bearded, with a defined physique. Rees felt himself start to get flustered.

“Rees this is my family friend who I grew up with on the ends.” Artie introduced his Friend.

“Nice to meet you.” Rees greeted.

“Same to you.” Artie’s friend replied who extended his hand.

Rees smiled and took his hand in his. The friend gave a strong but firm handshake. Rees was surprised how firm but soft his hands were.

He moisturises his hands a lot Rees thought. Rees didn’t squeeze his hand back but used his free hand to make a grander gesture by clasping the grip on top. As the two parted Rees rubbed the back of the Friends hand. Definitely he moisturises.

“What was that?” The friend laughed.

“What was what?” Rees feigned ignorance.

“Babe have you seen Max?” Lelani suddenly emerged from behind Rees.

Her eyes opened wide seeing Artie’s youngest for the first time.

“Oh Helloooooooo.” She called out to the child who still clung around the friend’s neck and looked on at Lelani with a suspicious gaze.

The look the toddler gave the grown woman was so severe that they all laughed. Lelani approached her. As she got close the toddler buried her head into her carrier’s neck.

  “No Kiss for me nooo?”

The toddler didn’t respond. Lelani leaned forward to deliver a kiss on the toddler’s cheek but was swapped away by her disapproving hand. They all laughed again. Lelani turned her attention to the child’s bearer.

“Hi. Im Lelani.” She leaned in and kissed him on both cheeks.

Rees introduced Artie’s Friend to his wife.

“That’s a coincidence. You have the same name as my youngest.” Lelani said, surprised.

“Oh excellent. He has a great name and he’ll grow up to be a great man.” Artie’s friend laughed in jest.

“Hopefully he’ll be as good looking too.” Rees added.

Rees caught a questioning sidewards glance from his new friend to Artie, who opened his eyes wide in silent acknowledgement to an unspoken question. Rees had forgotten himself for a brief moment. He gave a nervous laugh and scratched his head. It was something he had always done when confronted with an uncomfortable situation.

Take time Rees take time. He thought. There was an awkward silence that fell upon the small group. Rees felt his hands start to get sweaty. He cast a pleading glance at Lelani who instantly read his expression.

“Babe. Have you seen the boys?”

They scanned the garden looking for signs of the children. A sudden loud burst of laughter drew their attention to where their boys where happily playing in a small group of some other children that had been brought to the bbq. Rees pointed to the boys. Artie motioned to his guest to help themselves to some food. Rees was happy to take the invite and moved off in the direction of his sons. Lelani followed him. As they moved off Rees looked back at the two men and caught Artie’s friend staring at Lelani’s rear. Surprisingly, being caught in the act, he didn’t flinch or avert his gaze but looked directly back at Rees. Rees smiled back and the friend nodded a silent nod.

“He’s an interesting one Artie’s friend isn’t he Lelani?”

  “Hmmmm I think so.”

Rees smiled and pushed Lelani in front of him, he saw some empty chairs situated in line of sight of where the children played and directed Lelani towards it. It was a good place to sit. A place where they could keep an eye on the children and not look too disconnected from the party. What Rees liked most about the location was that it was separate from the main body of people. Rees didn’t want to socialise with these types of people. He felt that he couldn’t be himself around Lelani’s friends. She had to persuade him to attend. Rees would have preferred to stay at home with the boys and he had offered to.

‘Go and enjoy your friends. Drink, eat and come home when you’re ready. I’ll look after the boys for the day. Take a day for yourself.’ he had said. Rees was generous like that. He liked to give Lelani her freedom. Let her have a break from the confines of family life, away from himself, the boys; put her hair down;  plus he loved spending time with his sons. There weren’t many things that Rees enjoyed in life but spending time with his sons was one of them. He never regretted having them. They always made him smile. He had a fun day planned out for them too but Lelani wanted to see her friend, her best friend. They hadn’t seen each other for a while so it was a well overdue reunion. Rees had only met Artie and Lea a few times over the years. They were nice people but not Resce’s type of people.

“Shall I get us a plate babe.” Lelani asked, drawing the 2 chairs closer together.

  “Oooh yes please.”

  “The works”

  “And more.”

A big smile appeared on Rees’ face. If there was one thing Rees could look forward to from today’s outing it was the food. Every time they had come to visit there had always been an assortment of caribbean food. Artie had a particular knack for cooking really spicy hot dishes and Rees loved spicy dishes. His mother was from Ghana which has its fair share of pepper hot stews, his mother being a doctor often worked late and long hours, so his father had done most of the cooking and upbringing of Rees and his siblings. His father was a really good cook and would cook a multitude of various dishes. Things he’d seen from the TV, dishes he had learned from Rees’ grandparents, traditional English cuisine, but mostly his father cooked things that he made up from the top of his head. Dishes that work surprisingly well but they were not spicy in nature. However on Sundays, which was his mothers day off from her practise, she made an extra effort to cook traditional Ghanaian dishes and his mum was an exceptional cook. Pepe stew, waakye, fried tilapia, kenkey, fried plantain, the works. It was the day of the week that everyone looked forward to eating, especially his dad. Unfortunately for Rees he had spent all his childhood eating the food not learning how to cook it. So when he had left home he would only eat his mother’s home cooked meals on the rare occasions he went home to visit.

“Here you go babe.” Lelani pushed a large plate of food into his hands and placed a glass of red wine by the side of his chair.

“Wow.” Rees’ eyes open wide to all the food. He noticed Lelani didn’t have her own plate.

 “Where’s yours hun?”

“I’m gonna go and get mine now.”

  Rees nodded his head.

“Babe I think this food might be a bit too hot for the boys.”

“Well, they did have a big lunch this afternoon didn’t they? I’ll keep an eye on them, don’t worry. I think I saw some finger food for children inside anyway.”

“Are you going to be ok babe.” Lelani questioned.

“Ofcourse.” Rees looked at her. He could tell by her tone that she wanted to say something more but she was hesitant. Rees knew what she wanted so he said it for her. “Babe go and catch up with your friends. I’ll look after the boys.”

Lelani smiled and kissed Rees on the corner of his lips. Rees watched her as she went to the food table and grabbed herself a plate and sorted through the selection of food. Lea came up beside her and the two put their arms around each other. He smiled and cast a quick glance to his boys. They had made a number of new friends and had extended the game of He to the children. Rees turned his attention on to important matters. His plate of food.

Rees took the final sip of wine from his glass. The plate of food that Lelani gifted him had disappeared long before this last sip. Rees smiled while he thought about the food. It is a great compliment to the chef when one smiles about the food he just ate. The taste that lives on in memory out lives the taste that eventually disappears in the mouth. Rees looked over at the food table. Artie was replenishing the various dishes that were running low. The sun was starting to set now but the music still played. Rees looked at his watch to get a sense of the time. It was coming up to 8.30pm. Early summer evenings in London the sun can set between 8 or 9pm. It’s easy for people to think the time was earlier than what it actually is. Rees gave his usual glance over to his son’s. They too had no concept of the time and continued to play with the same energised enthusiasm as when they first arrived at the party. The game of He had evolved into a contest of acrobatics. Seeing who could do the most spectacular cart wheels and forwards rolls. Rees loved to watch his son’s having a great time. He decided not to interrupt them.

Let them burn out their sweet energies he thought.

Rees turned his attention back to the main food table. A large group of people had gathered to talk and dance. Rees noticed that Lelani was having a conversation with Arties friend. It was the kind of conversation that involved most of the people gathering around but when Lelani spoke, her attention was directed towards him. She sipped on a glass of wine during the interaction, playing with the glass in her hands, constantly pressing the rim against her lips. It was a habit she did when she fancied someone. Rees watched them intently, trying to imagine what they were talking about. He couldn’t hear them. They were too far away. She was definitely into him. Rees eyed him with admiration. He was taller than both of them, standing a little over 6ft. Lelani had a thing for tall men and Rees was shorter than her. Lelani also had a curvature that attracted bigger men. Especially men that liked wider hips and a bigger bottom. Rees laughed to himself. He remembered that famous song with the lyrics “I like big butts and I can not lie”. He enjoyed watching them from his quiet spot in the garden.

She’s getting more touchy feely with this guy he thought.

As they spoke a song came on which they both liked. It was a reggae song. Most of the people gathered around the table raised their glasses in salute to the song. It was a well known song. Everyone sitting down stood up to dance to the song. Rees watched everyone sway to the music, a few people grabbed a partner to dance with, some of the single women started to slowly whine their waists by themselves. Rees loved the sight of women whining. He couldn’t whine himself, he didn’t have the rhythm for it, he wished he had. He found it very arousing. He watched Lelani start to edge closer to the friend. He was whining his waist too. The two edged closer to each but stopped a hands span apart, not touching, but clearly connected. Rees watched him move his hips. He had a seductive movement to his gyrating. Rees noticed Lelani was also looking downwards at his hips. She synchronised her own movements with his. She also had a seductive movement to her. Rees licked his lips. The friend started to look down at Lelani’s body and edge closer. Rees realising what was about to happen suddenly jumped and quickly made his way towards the two. He didn’t want to cause a scene. He hated awkward moments. Just before the two meet at the hips Rees put his arms around them and interrupted the union.

  “Hey guys”

Artie’s friend suddenly took a deep breath in, remembering that Lelani actually came to the party with her husband.

“Omg your husband.” He looked at Rees apologetically. “Look bruv i’m really sorry. No disrespect.” He tried to pull away from Rees’ embrace but Lelani held him tight.

“Bruv, it’s cool.” Rees replied, still having his arms around them making a trio. “If you like Lelani, that’s cool. Just know your audience and grinding up my wife in the open at Artie’s bbq isn’t cool.”

Rees looked around the garden, he hated embarrassing situations, luckily it seemed no one had noticed what was happening between them. Everyone was engrossed in their own individual conversations, drinking or dancing. Rees turned his attention back to his new friend. He loved this man’s features. Especially his face, a strong brown jawline with deep brown acorn skin.

“Do you want to come home with us?” Rees asked.

  “What?”

“You like my wife, She definitely likes you and….” Rees paused and lowered his voice, nervous of who could hear and how the new friend would react. “And I like you too.”

Rees gave out a nervous laugh. That would be the bonus of the day. Coming to the BBQ and sinking his teeth into some tasty meat. Rees looked into his eyes then looked away. He didn’t know how to be forward in this type of situation. He was more of the passive partner, the one who would bring up the introduction. Then he would kick back and let Lelani take control. She was the more aggressive one.

The friend kissed his teeth in reaction and looked at the two with a wry smirk.

“Shut up. You’re messing with me.”

“No.” Rees cleared his throat. His first answer was a bit timid. “No. we’re being serious.”

Rees lowered his voice to a whisper. “If you want, after the party you can come home with us, or come and meet us somewhere., and you can have some fun with Lelani.”

At this Lelani pulled herself stronger onto their new friend. He didn’t move away but had stopped dancing to the music. Lelani started to grind against him. Rees saw the apprehension in the guy. He was unsure but he was still there. He hadn’t run away. He was curious. He just needed convincing. Rees presented the next invitation nervously.

“And if you’d like you could have some fun with me?” Rees nervously squeezed his well defined arm.

The friend looked around. Clearly he had the same thoughts that Rees had about drawing unwanted attention. He shook his head in disbelief but Lelani nodded, confirming his unspoken question. He also lowered his voice.

“I’ve never done something like this before.”

“We’ll have fun.” Lelani reassured him, she was still grinding on him. He shyly looked around the garden again and then slowly started to move in rhythm with her biting his lower lip.

Rees smiled, it was just like he thought.

“Look let’s not make it too obvious. Especially you Lelani.” Rees cast her a cynical gaze. “Lets just enjoy the party.” Rees smiled at him. The friend slowly nodded and smiled back.

Rees’ mobile phone suddenly began to ring from inside his back pocket. He leaned to one side and pulled it out. Seeing the caller i.d. Rees gave the two a ‘one moment’ gesture with his hand and broke away. He sighed a long sigh and let the call ring out. When the call had ended he went into his call history and deleted the call log. He looked over at Lelani and their friend. The two flirted with each other inconspicuously. Lelani looked over at Rees, who gave her a questioning thumbs up that tilted into a thumbs down. She smiled and answered with a thumbs up. Their friend caught the gesture between the two and replied with his own thumbs up. The three laughed in unison, Rees covered his mouth nervously, his excitement was getting the best of him. He eagerly went into his messages and sent a quick text to his mother in law, to ask if she could look after the boys tonight. His phone beeped almost instantly after displaying a smiley face emoji and a thumbs up. Giving people the thumbs up was another one of his habits.  Rees enjoyed the fact that he could call upon Lelani’s parents anytime. Her mum was good like that. Always willing to see her grandchildren. Rees wouldn’t dream about texting his parents. Although they may want to see their grandchildren they almost certainly didn’t want to see him and it had been years since they had laid eyes on each other. Rees pushed the thoughts of his parents out of his mind. He didn’t want to get upset and tonight looked like it was going to be a promising night after all. Rees wanted to drop off the boys as soon as possible. He checked his watch again. It was after 10pm. Rees summoned the boys who came running. He prompted them to say goodbye to their recently made playmates as it was home time. The boys whined in protest but Rees was eager to get them off to their grandmother’s. Rees sternly prompted them again. The boys returned to their playmates with solemn faces waving reluctant goodbyes. Rees made his way back to Lelani and their new friend.

“Hey guys.” Rees beamed with excitement. “Shall we go drop the boys off. And then head back home and then you come and meet us there?”

“Hmmm….. Actually guys i’m kinda feeling a bit nervous. Would you guys like to come back to mine instead.”

Rees sensed that he was flaking. It was common for first timers to bail out at the last minute and if they didn’t go through at the first invite then the likelihood was that he would never come through again. Rees wanted to keep his interest for as long as possible. It was rare that both he and Lelani found a man that they were both into.

“Yes of course. Even better. Look?” Rees had a quick idea.  “Why don’t I go drop the boys. You two stay for a bit longer then Lelani can go with you and I’ll come join you.”

“Ooh Yeah. That’s a good idea. We’ll have a good time.” Lelani encouraged. She looked at Rees hopefully. She also sensed that their new friend might change his mind.

He nodded and smiled. Rees collected his address and gave him a reassuring clasp on the shoulder. Rees turned Lelani and excitedly raised his eyebrows. She smirked back.

What a great outcome to the party he thought.

Rees quickly turned on his heels, gathering the boys, guiding them through the party and into the house. When he found Artie he had already made up his excuse for leaving.

“Hey Artie, I’m gonna go now with the boys and take them home. They’re pretty tired and I’m gonna get them to bed.”

“We’re not tired dad.” The boys both protested in unison.

Rees shushed them and Artie laughed.

“Artie can I just go to the toilet before we go? We have a little bit of a drive ahead. Can you watch the boys for a sec.”

“Yeah no problem. Toilet is on the top floor.”

“Boys, do you need to go to the toilet before we go?”

 They shook their heads.

Rees left them and quickly scaled the flight of stairs. Most of the guests were using the toilet on the ground floor but Artie directed Rees to their main bathroom toilet. Rees arrived at the top floor where a dimly shining light lit the passage. He had only been up here once before and couldn’t remember which room was the bathroom. Rees opened one door but found a bedroom. He had a nosey peek round but closed the door almost as quickly as he had opened it. The second door he opened was the bathroom. He closed the door and skipped to the toilet bowl to relieve himself. He knew that Lelani would work her magic on their new friend. Hopefully if things turned out well he would be a regular for them. Rees suspected that maybe he had never been with another man before but if he was ok for Rees to be there then even if nothing happened between them tonight he would later open up to Rees’ advances later. As Rees thought about this and the anticipation for the events of tonight, the door suddenly opened. Rees, in his excitement, had forgotten to lock the toilet door. It was him. Rees was still urinating. His new friend froze in surprise. Half surprise that someone was in the toilet fully exposed and half embarrassed that it was Rees. He turned to walk out but stopped. He paused in front of the door for a moment, contemplating something and slowly closed the door and locked it. He turned around and rested on the door smiling. He had a coyish mannerism about him. Rees also smiled back. Perhaps he didn’t need to work on him after all. Rees finished relieving himself and buttoned up his pants. He washed his hands in the sink. His heart was pounding. All the while watching his smiling friend. Rees blushed. He slowly walked up to him, wiping his hands on his jeans. They both smiled at each other and said nothing. Rees came up close to him. He was a lot taller. Rees licked his lips, he was short of breath. He tried to conceal it as best as he could. Rees felt him looking down at him but he couldn’t raise his head. His nerves had the best of him. His new friend pinched Rees’ chin with his thumb and index finger and tilted his head upwards, Rees licked his lips and moved in for the kiss.

Water blurred his vision and a searing pain entered Rees head as he stumbled backwards into the bathroom and crashed onto the floor. Blood poured out of his nose from the tremendous headbutt that had struck him. The pain was so intense that he gasped. As he stood back up he felt a driving knee erupt into his groin. The blow knocked the wind out of Rees and he collapsed on the floor in a heap, holding his groin. The attack was so sudden that he didn’t have any time to collect his thoughts. He couldn’t call for help and he had no chance of defending himself. As he gasped from pain a large trainer came crashing down on his stomach knocking whatever essence was left out of him. Then the same foot came pressing down onto his neck, pinning his throat closed, making sure whatever escaped his lungs was not going to find its way back in anytime soon. Rees squirmed under the pressure. His new friend leant over him watching him squirm. Rees looked up water eyed into his face. Shook pounding through his heart. Rees saw he had the largest of grins on his face.

“You know what surprises me about you batty boys?” The new Friend asked

Rees, wide eyed, couldn’t reply, he could only hear. The only response he could give was the clutching at the foot crushing his throat.

“Is that you’ve married a fine piece of woman like that. Who you sleep next to everynight. Who you can bend over anytime you want and all you can think about is bending over next man.”

  Rees continued to gasp.

 “I just don’t get it.”

Rees continued to struggle to get the foot of his throat to no avail. The lights in the toilet rapidly started to dim. Rees felt himself starting to drift off somewhere. His body felt very light, almost like he was floating. He had no control anymore. Suddenly air forced its way back into his lungs as the foot came off his throat. The darkness that had started to consume the room slowly started to sweep away. Rees sensed his so-called friend turn him over. He felt something leave his back pocket and then rolled back. Rees gasped for air. He could breathe now but it hurt to breathe. It hurt all over. His nose, his throat, his stomach and his balls. Tears streamed down his face. He slowly scrambled to the toilet bowl and buried his head into its side, trying to prevent any further attack to his face or neck. There was no more attack. Nothing else came. Rees held onto the toilet bowl. Fearing that this was only the beginning of something far worse. His excited fantasy of the future had been wrenched away into the wicked horrors of the present. Rees couldn’t think clearly. His brain had kicked into survival mode. Fight and flight had whimpered away leaving only fright. It was fright that made him cling to the toilet bowl. It was a horrid feeling. An unfamiliar feeling that was notoriously starting to get too friendly. Rees had a sudden vision of his parents. The first time he had felt this feeling was from them. Rees felt a sudden hand on his shoulder and he screamed a silent scream. His mouth wide but no sound came out. His so-called new friend leaned in close.

“Don’t worry bruv. I’ll look after your wife tonight.” He whispered.

He gently patted Rees on the shoulder and walked away. Rees heard the door lock click open, the toilet light switched off and the door gently opened but slowly closed, leaving Rees wrapped up in darkness to the sounds of footsteps that slowly faded away to the loud pounding of music.
